We are aware that there is currently very high demand for vasectomy procedures across Derbyshire, and that this is creating frustration for patients who have made the decision to pursue permanent contraception. To ensure patients already referred can be treated within a manageable timeframe, Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust (DCHS) has paused acceptance of new referrals. We fully recognise that this position is not ideal for local people and appreciate the additional pressure this places on GP practices supporting these patients.
DCHS continues to deliver vasectomy procedures within its commissioned capacity; however, demand now exceeds the level of activity that can safely be delivered within the current contract period (to March 2028). Both DCHS and NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) share the responsibility to ensure services are delivered safely, within funded limits, and with fairness to all patients.
The ICB is considering the best interim approach for managing referrals during this period, recognising that both DCHS and GP providers are currently operating at capacity. Once this position is agreed, further guidance will be communicated to practices. We want to assure you that the ICB and DCHS are working together to develop a long-term, sustainable solution for vasectomy provision that better meets the needs of Derbyshire residents and upholds principles of equity and patient choice. Thank you for your continued support and understanding while we work through this challenge.
DCHS has put a notice of this on their website to inform patients.
Given the pausing of accepting new referrals into Vasectomy services Newhall Surgery kindly request that patients post-pone their request for an appointment to discuss a Vasectomy until after 1 April 2026 when we anticipate more information will have been shared with us. On behalf of DCHS, we extend our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
