This briefing highlights key changes to where some departments are located at Royal Derby Hospital, which impacts how patients access our Adult Emergency Department, Medical Same Day Emergency Care and Blue Urgent Care services, as well as Patient Transport services for Discharge.
As part of UHDB’s winter preparations and to support faster access to care in urgent and emergency services, a number of departments at Royal Derby Hospital are relocating for the next 18 months to have the right physical footprint to better manage demand for their service.
Department relocated from Monday 24 November 2025:
- Orthopaedic Elective Clinic, part of Trauma and Orthopaedics Outpatients (T&O OPD), has moved to the Discharge Assessment Unit’s previous location, which can be accessed by car park 8. Fracture Clinic has remained in it’s current location.
Departments relocating between Friday 28 November to Sunday 30 November 2025:
- From Sunday 30 November, any walk in patients for Adults Emergency Department, Medical Same Day Emergency Care, and Urgent Treatment Centre (also known as Blue Urgent Care) will use a new waiting area to be triaged, accessed through Entrance 8, next to the Fracture Clinic. The waiting area will be clearly signposted as ‘Adult Emergency Department (A&E)’.
- Medical Same Day Emergency Care (mSDEC) will be co-located with the new Adult Emergency Department waiting area, next to Fracture Clinic from Sunday 30 November.Patients should access this through Entrance 8 by using the Adult Emergency Department waiting area.
- Blue Urgent Care services (Urgent Treatment Centre) will be in a new location from Sunday 30 November.
- All walk-in patients should initially go to the new Adult Emergency Department waiting area at Entrance 8 for triage.
- Patients with appointments booked through NHS111 or ambulances can go directly to the Urgent Treatment Centre, by following the signs to Blue Urgent Care.
- Discharge Assessment Unit (DAU) will move into Ward 102 (currently Medical SDEC) on Saturday 29 November. This is a stand-alone modular building near the front of the hospital. Patient Transport services should use the drop-off area at the main entrance.
- Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (fSDEC) will move to the front entrance of Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) on Friday 28 November.
All relocations can be seen on the updated Royal Derby Hospital map >
